The historian Janina Ramirez has suggested that their use of Middle English was a sensible choice, considering the inexplicable nature of what they were attempting to describe, as they could "couch their theological ruminations more as personal encounters with the divine". ![]() Her life was contemporaneous with four other English mystics-Walter Hilton, Richard Rolle, Margery Kempe, and the unknown author of the work known as The Cloude of Unknowyng-all of whom wrote in the vernacular. ![]() I'm excited to pass this series on to my almost ten year old daughter because the adventure, danger, fun, and magic is very exciting and perfect for anyone who loves middle grade fiction.Ĭontent: mild moments of peril and violence. I loved the friendships that are formed and the character lessons learned are fantastic. ![]() I loved seeing how they're all interconnected. One of my favorite things about this book (and I have read Rump, so I'm not sure if it's similar, but I'm guessing it is), is that there are so many different snippets into other fairy tales. I love the way Red figures things out with her situation and doesn't just sit back, waiting for things to fall into her lap. ![]() She's actually brave, fearful, charming, and brash, all rolled up into one great character. In a lot of re-tellings, Red almost seems like an oblivious, spoiled child, yet in this one, there is depth to the reasons why she does what she does and it makes sense. Shurtliff does a fantastic job in doing just that-weaving a familiar tale with unique twists that makes it new and fresh. I'm always curious to see how an author can change a beloved classic and spin it in a new way, yet leaving the best, lovable parts intact. ![]() ![]() ![]() And four blocks away from here, Jeremy, over at the headquarters of Fox News, there is a mad scramble going on right now because there will be no “Tucker Carlson Tonight” at 8:00 PM as it has always aired because Tucker Carlson has been fired. There was a certain timeline in Sloan’s book - something really big happens on the two-year anniversary of Brandon’s accident and then something really big happens on the two-year anniversary of his death - so I knew that I had to replicate that timeline in The Friend Zone. While we were in submissions, I told my agent, “What do you think about me going back in time two years and writing Kristen and Josh’s love story, so we can live through the events that make Sloan the person she is in her book?” So that’s what I did. ![]() So I had this idea to write this book about a woman who finds this dog, and I wanted it to be a book about grief. Social stigmas were attached to these men and their families during a time when racial 'mixing' was taboo and, at the same time, a biopolitical instrument by which to 'manage' so-called half-castes.
